On World Aids Day 2025 Celebration

Monrovia, Liberia – December 1, 2025 – As the world observes World AIDS Day 2025, ActionAid Liberia underscores the urgent need for holistic and collective efforts to transform the trajectory of Liberia’s HIV response. With an estimated 36,000 people living with HIV including 21,000 women (55.3%) the country has made significant progress, achieving an impressive 95% viral suppression rate. However, reaching 100% viral suppression is possible only through fair, accessible, and gender-responsive services for everyone, regardless of location.

Liberia’s HIV prevalence rate currently stands at 0.9%, and reducing this figure to zero is 100% achievable. This requires intentional action, stronger health systems, and increased national investment, rather than continued heavy reliance on donor funding.

Today, 30,798 out of 36,000 people living with HIV are receiving treatment, marking meaningful progress. Yet, ensuring that every person has access to treatment will create a far greater impact. Together, we can make this possible.

ActionAid Liberia calls on government, civil society, and development partners to:

  • Invest in sustainable health systems that prioritize HIV prevention and treatment.
  • Expand gender-responsive services to address the disproportionate impact on women.
  • Ensure equitable access to HIV services for all communities, including rural areas.

Liberia has shown that progress is possible. Now is the time to accelerate efforts, close the gaps, and ensure no one is left behind. Ending HIV is within our reach if we act collectively and intentionally."  Elizabeth Gbah Johnson, Country Director, ActionAid Liberia said at the start of the AIDS Day celebration
