Calling for Girls Protection and Education

In commemoration of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, ActionAid Liberia (AAL) has launched the Urban Young Women Movement, a platform uniting fearless and young feminists across the country to speak with one voice, pushing for girls and women’s protection, and to lead transformative change.

The movement aims to amplify the voices of girls, challenges, system barriers, and demand protection and equal opportunities for young women, especially in urban communities.

What made this year’s celebration particularly significant was the bold and vibrant public engagements led by AAL’s newly appointed child rights ambassador, Little Angie Sackey, alongside a group of passionate young feminists, breaking away from traditional celebration, and activities took to the streets, using music, arts, and public dialogues to raise awareness about the challenges girls face in Liberia and to advance for their rights.

“Girls are not wives. They are not limited to washing dishes, and selling in the streets. Protect them and invest in girls’ education and their advancement.”

The creative and energic street engagement struck a chord with Liberians, Sparking conversation nationwide and highlighting the urgent need to end harmful gender norms and invest in the future of girls.

Through initiatives like the Urban Young Women Movement, ActionAid Liberia is not only honoring the Day for the Girl Child, but also laying the groundwork for lasting change, driven by girls, for girls.
